Madridi Street Refugee Shelter

This is currently the largest transit refugee shelter in Hungary. Since it opened in March 2022, more than 100,000 guest nights have been spent here by refugees from Ukraine.

Most of them stay only a few nights before travelling on to their intended final destination, but many stay for weeks while waiting for visas outside Europe. Unfortunately, in recent months, the number of our guests who have nowhere else to go has been steadily increasing.

We are constantly improving the refugee shelter with the help of the subsidies we receive: we provide three meals a day, a playground in the courtyard, a study room and a free “mini-shop” for refugees.

The refugee shelter is the largest of its kind in Hungary, run mainly by volunteers and funded by donations.

More than 2,000 volunteers have visited the Madrid in the last 15 months. We need 10-15 enthusiastic people a day to run the shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Volunteers run the reception desk, help in the canteen, interpreting, looking after the children, distributing daily supplies from the warehouse, organising travel and the coordinated running of the whole hostel.
